Without warning, another silent blizzard engulfs this hunter’s camp in 1907 Alaska. There is an eerie hush, and then the wind begins to blow; the tent walls start to flap gently and whisps of snow push through a gap at the entrance. The wind is picking up now, and the hunter hopes his tent construction will hold. Then there is a whistling and a howling. Could he hear wolves in the distance ,or were his ears playing tricks? The snow has been falling steadily for some time, and the weight of it on the side walls is pushing them in. “Well, maybe it will stop the tent from blowing away,” he reassures himself.

Unable to resist the temptation, he pushes the entrance flap to one side and looks out peering into the blizzard. He can’t believe his eyes – it looks like a grizzly walking toward him, but he can’t be sure through the poor visibility. “It can’t be a bear,” he calculates. “It’s early November and they should be in their dens.” He readies his gun and sits at the back of the tent and waits.
