This painting was inspired by a brief
story recounted to me about an incident involving some hunters
in the 1890s. Although basing it on what I heard, I did
take some artistic liberties with the final depiction.
The hunters camped somewhere in the Rockies,
were sheltering from the rain, perhaps playing cards and having
a drink. As they recount the activities of the day and probably
share some tall tales, one of the hunters sees movement out of
the corner of his eye through the open tent flap. As he peers
through the steady rain into the darkness he catches sight of
something approaching the deadened campfire. As his eyes adjust
he sees its a grizzly (brown bear) searching for food scraps
in the ashes. Perhaps there were still traces of venison.
The conversation in the tent was momentarily
silenced; the only sound was the rain hitting the empty pots
and pans. The hunter nearest the opening slowly reached for his
gun. The bear seemed to ignore them and was pacing back and forth
and circling the dampened fire. At one point the bear came so
close the hunters could have reached out and touched it.
Unable to resist the temptation, the
hunter nearest the opening finally took aim and fired. The bear
spun round and took off into the night. It wasnt until
the next morning that the dead bear was found.
