It has been documented that Hernando
de Soto and some of his
men spent the night on Useppa during
the time they were charting the
southwest coast of Florida. Seerey-
Lester has painted a discarded helmet,
perhaps left behind in their rush
to leave. Note the reflection of the
ever-present great egret in the helmet
and another passing by.
